THE WORDS OF YOGA
Namaste
Namaste is a widespread word in the yoga culture, but its use in studios in the West is more and more questioned. It is something a teacher may automatically say at the end of class without questioning its actual meaning or origin. However originally Namaste is used as an introductory greeting, when meeting or encountering someone we highly respect, not when leaving.
It translates as โ I bow to youโ, sometimes also as โthe divine in me bows to the divine in youโ and is a sacred saying, that should be used wisely. The gesture associated with Namaste is called Anjali mudra, palms together in prayer at the heart center, head bowed. I personally have stopped saying Namaste in my classes, and instead always end with 3 deep collective breaths and a warm thank you. It simply feels more authentic to me.
If youโre interested, check out this video to go further into when and how to use Namaste.
